CAT 2018 Slot II Paper Analysis in Detail
The pattern of CAT 2018 Slot II was fairly similar to that of slot I. The second slot of CAT 2018 also had 27 Non-MCQs out of 100 questions. An attempt of 60 out of 100 can be considered good as per the opinion of most experts. Quants as expected after slot I examination was a tough nut to crack for most aspirants.
|Section||No. of Questions||No. of non-MCQ questions||Difficulty Level||Good Attempts|
|Verbal Ability and Reading comprehension||34||7||Easy||28+|
|Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning||32||8||Moderate||16+|
VARC (Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension)
A total of 34 questions were asked in this section with 7 Non-MCQs. The Reading Comprehension contained 5 passages. There no official instructions on any of the passages. One passage had a 4 questions while the other 4 had 5 questions each.
Only a small portion of RC questions (4-5) were can be termed tricky. Most of the questions were inference based, but the options provided were relatively easy.
The VA (Verbal Ability) section contained 4 subjective para jumble questions with 4 questions and 3 Odd sentence para jumble questions. All of them were TITA (Type in The Answer) questions.
Three para summary questions appeared to be of moderate difficulty level. Most of the questions in fact were easier to attempt as compared to slot I. Overall, 16-17 attempts with near 90% accuracy will be considered good attempt.
|Area||Topic||No. of Questions|
|Para-jumble (Odd sentence out)||3|
Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR)
Out of 32 questions in the DILR section, 8 were NON-MCQs. One major change compared to CAT 2017 was that the theme of all the sets were rather much more conventional. One of the sets in DI was in fact very straightforward with rather direct calculations.
The emphasis for candidates should have been on selecting the right question sets from the section than focusing on the number of sets being solved. There were actually couple of questions/sets which should would be better to left alone. Some of the sets did involve calculations but they were relatively on the easier side.
LR sets can be scaled on moderate on the difficulty level. Again, an attempt of 15-17 questions with 90% accuracy can be called good.
|Section||Topic||No. of Questions||Good Attempts|
|Data Interpretation||Currency Exchange and rate changes||4||2-3|
|Smartphones and market share||4||4|
|Box Diagram of 3 companies/products||4||1-2|
|Logical Reasoning||Interview Arrivals (Arrangement)||4||3-4|
|Set theory (3 games, Ludo, Kho-kho, Gilli Danda)||4||2|
|—||Tickets to a show, old, young and middle aged people||4||2-3|
Following all the reactions and discussions after CAT 2018 Slot I, students couldn’t have hoped for an easy Quants sections and in fact it was not to be. Most of the questions were calculation and logic intensive rather than theory intensive.
The section contained 12 Non-MCQs out of a total of 34 questions. Most experts argued that this was toughest section in last 4 editions of CAT. The quants section reinforced IIM Calcutta’s preference for a tough Quants section.
Quants section was dominated by Arithmetic and Geometry questions. The emphasis clearly seemed to be on testing candidates’ fundamental knowledge and clarity of concepts. Options were rather tricky to answer in some of the questions. Total 3-4 questions were asked from Logarithm and Number System.
A good attempt will be about 18-20 questions with near about 85% accuracy.
|Section||Topic||No. of Questions||Good Attempts|
|Quantitative Ability||Number System||2||1|
|Geometry and Mensuration||7||3-4|
