Most candidates are still anxious even after declaration of result and checking out their final percentile. The real cause of the anxiety is the unpredictability of IIMs and their cutoff percentile. Although CAT Percentile is the primary criteria for shortlisting of candidates, it is not an assurance for their entry to IIMs. This is primarily owing to the selection criteria and varying weightage assigned to scores by CAT by each IIM.

CAT Percentile Predictor, based on its advanced algorithm and analysis of last 5 year trends in IIM Selection Process, is likely to give you a strong edge while shortlisting colleges to apply.

How is CAT Percentile Calculated?

CAT Percentile broadly speaking is a measure of a candidates’ performance in relation to performance of other candidates. The percentile allows categorization of a candidate in comparison to candidates scoring below him/her. To take an example, those scoring 99 percentiles in CAT are simply candidate whose performance is better than the remaining 99% candidates taking the CAT Test that year.

So, how is the CAT Percentile calculated for all the candidates. The formula for percentile is as follows – rank of the candidate/total no. candidates appearing *100. This means that if 1000 candidates took the test and you secured a rank of 999 then the percentile will be calculated:

= 999/1000 * 100

Scores for all the candidates is scaled by following CAT Normalization Procedure for candidates appearing across different sessions of CAT Exam. The table below provides an indication of the scores required by a candidate to achieve a certain percentile in CAT. CAT Percentile is the primary criteria for shortlisting candidates to participate in subsequent rounds of CAT Selection Process.

In the Group Discussion (GD) round, candidates are assessed based on their interaction in a group, their leadership qualities, communication skills, and problem-solving capabilities. In some institutes, a GD is replaced by a Written Ability Test (WAT) in which, candidates are adjudged on their critical thinking ability, writing skills and the ability to formulate a response on the given topic in a structured, precise and coherent manner within the given time-frame.

The Personal Interview (PI) round is usually the final step in the IIM Selection process in which the candidate appears in face-to-face interaction with an admission official or a panel of officials. The idea behind this round is getting to know the candidates in-depth – the personality, the aspirations, and the motivators.
