CAT 2018 is officially scheduled for Nov 25, 2018 by IIM Calcutta. The national level management entrance is entry to graduate programs in prestigious IIMs and other popular b-schools in the country.
The syllabus of CAT exam is divided into three sections, namely:
- Quantitative Ability
- Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
- Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension.
Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension appears to be the toughest among the three for a vast majority of candidates appearing in CAT. As sectional cut-offs in each section will play a major role in final percentile calculation, we have to consider and prepare for each section equally.
Here, we would be focusing on important facets of CAT 2018 Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension along with the preparation tips that are needed to upgrade your performance in this section. Some of these are as follows:-
Improve Reading Skills
Verbal ability section checks reading skills of a candidate. Hence, the priority while preparing for this section should be improving reading skills, more in width than in depth. So, one should start reading the material which they have not read before. For example mythology, spiritual, religion, social science, humanities etc.
Plenty of Practice
For preparing reading comprehension and verbal ability both, by hearting grammar rules or learning new words won’t be much significant at last moment of preparation. Instead of this, one should try to solve ample of questions. Solving previous years’ questions will add much more value to your preparation.
Giving Mock Tests
Keep on taking mock test at regular basis. Not only it would introduce you to the exam pattern and difficulty level of the exam but also will enhance confidence level in you to take the exam without any panic attack.
Analysis of Mock Tests
Every time you give mock test, try to analyze your performance, find your strong and weak areas. Work on your weaker areas to make yourself as good as you are at your strengths.
Allocate Time Proportionate to the Marka
Do not spend much time on any one question. If you are not sure enough about a question, leave it quickly and move to next. In entrance exams, time plays a crucial role and you should be very particular about on which question you have to invest what amount of time.
Identifying the Correct Option
In CAT exam, there would be questions whose options would appear to be almost same and that’s when head starts spinning. Do not get panicked, read all the options thoroughly, instead of finding similarities, try to find any difference in them. Because, answer lies in that difference only!
While going for reading comprehension section, try to attempt as many passages as you can. Analyze the passages and questions asked in them. Then start with the easy passages reaching to the difficult ones step by step.
